For 3-D Cleopatra flick
Steven Soderbergh Courting Catherine Zeta-Jones
Director Steven Soderbergh is wooing Catherine Zeta-Jones to star in his next project, a 3-D, live-action, rock 'n' roll musical based on the life of Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Soderbergh would like Zeta-Jones to play the monarch and is reportedly jocking Aussie actor Hugh Jackman to take the role of Cleopatra’s famous lover, Marc Antony. The film is currently being shopped for financing and distribution, with a score written by indie rockers Guided by Voices and a script by ex-GBV bassist and author James Greer. This would be Soderbergh’s first attempt at directing a musical. Zeta-Jones, however, is no stranger to the genre, having picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar a few years ago for her role in Chicago.
