Sam Mendes to Direct Preacher For Columbia
Director Sam Mendes will helm the feature film adaptation of Preacher, the graphic novel series from Vertigo that ran from 1995 through 2000. Original Films and Kickstart Productions will produce. The Preacher series is extremely popular among comic book aficionados, relaying the tale of a down-on-his-luck Texas preacher who is possessed by a supernatural force that is both good and evil and named Genesis. The Preacher sets off to find God, who has taken a hiatus from his deity duties, accompanied by an ex-girlfriend and an Irish vampire who has a propensity for downing libations. There had been plans for a one-hour HBO series, but that project never got off the ground. There was another film version planned, with Kevin Smith attached as the producer through his View Askew banner and James Marsden attached to portray the title role, but that plan has since been scrapped, too.
Writers and a cast for the Mendes version have yet to be hired.
