Brokeback Mountain Opera Nixed For Now
A New York City production of an opera based on the Academy Award-nominated drama Brokeback Mountain has been shelved in the wake of the departure of Gerard Mortier, the general manager of the City Opera at Lincoln Center. Mortier had held the dual posts of GM and ad director since last year and his first year of programming was scheduled for the 2009-2010 season. His ambitious clutch of operas have been scrapped in the wake of his departure.Rumor is that Mortier quit over budget issues that would not allow him to see his vast visions through to completion. City Opera has been plagued by financial issues and layoffs in recent weeks. In addition to the Brokeback opera, Mortier had commissioned an opera based on the life of the legendary Walt Disney. That plan has also been shelved. Mortier plans to present his ideas to other organizations in the wake of his City Opera departure, so there is a possibility that these projects may eventually see the light of day.
