Kristen Stewart to Rock as Joan Jett

Kristen Stewart is on her way to further stardom. The lead of the blockbuster Twilight will play raven-haired female rock 'n' roll pioneer Joan Jett in an as-yet untitled biopic of Jett's first band, The Runaways.

Floria Sigismondi is set to direct the film and she also wrote the screenplay. River Road Entertainment will produce the film and Jett herself will also serve as an executive producer.

The film will center on Jett and Runaways vocalist Cherie Currie as the band shot to fame as leather-clad teenaged rebels in the 1970s, as well as their eventual break up. The movie will begin shooting in 2009 around Stewart's prior commitment to two Twilight sequels. The first sequel, New Moon, is scheduled to begin lensing sometime in the first quarter of next year.
