Independent Spirit Award Nominations Announced

Awards season is upon us, starting with the Independent Spirit Awards. Ballast, Frozen River, Rachel Getting Married, Wendy and Lucy, and The Wrestler all received nominations for Best Feature, with Ballast, Frozen River, and Rachel Getting Married leading the pack with six nominations a piece.

Winners will be announced when the awards are handed out on February 21. Mickey Rourke was nominated for Best Male Lead for his harrowing portrayal in The Wrestler, while Oscar winner Javier Bardem received a nod for his work in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Wendy and Lucy's Michelle Williams, Frozen River's Melissa Leo, and Rachel Getting Married's Anne Hathaway will battle it out for Best Female Lead.

Other categories include Best Director, Best First Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, Best Cinematography, Best Documentary, Best Foreign Film, and the Robert Altman award, which will go to Synecdoche, New York. That film was also nominated for Best First Feature.
