Dark Knight Re-Release Set for January 23

Warner Brothers is giving fans one more chance to experience The Dark Knight on the big screen. The studio has confirmed January 23 as part of a nationwide launch that will guarantee the film reaches a $1 billion global take at the box office. The Dark Knight would be only the fourth film in history to rake in a whopping $1 billion in box office receipts, sharing the distinction with Titanic, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The Dark Knight is currently only $4 million short of reaching the hoped-for $1 billion dollar mark. It is the second highest grossing domestic film of all time, lead only by Titanic. The re-release will hit theaters just six weeks after the film's DVD release, which is scheduled for tomorrow. The re-release is also expected to help the film's deafening Oscar buzz continue to grow.

In other Dark Knight-related news, actor Heath Ledger, whom insiders predict will receive a posthumuous Oscar nomination for his role as The Joker, has been awarded AFI's international award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Batman's arch nemesis. The award is one of the country's top honors. AFI described Ledger as "a ground-breaking actor trapped in the body of a leading man."
