National Society of Film Critics Pick Waltz With Bashir

The National Society of Film Critics has selected Waltz with Bashir, the animated, quasi-documentary about Israel's September 1982 invasion of lebanon, as the best film of 2008.

The Society also chose Sean Penn as Best Actor for his much-lauded portrayal of politico Harvey Milk in Milk, while Sally Hawkins was named Best Actress for her work in Happy-Go-Lucky. Happy-Go-Lucky director Mike Leigh was chosen as Best Director and writer of the Best Screenplay.

49 of the Society's 63 members met in New York last week to make their selections. The NSFC awards are considered the "final" critical awards of the season and, oftentimes, the Society's selections don't match up with Academy Award voters and their nominations.
