Jackie Earle Haley, whose career was resurrected in the last few years thanks to roles in
Watchmen and Little Children, the latter which garnered him
a Best Supporting Actor nomination, has signed on to play dream haunter Freddy Krueger in the New Line/Platinum Dunes relaunch of the A Nightmare on Elm Street horror franchise. The role of the fedora-wearing, knife-handed killer was popularized by Robert Englund who declined to be a part of the reboot. The 1980s horror series was one of New Line's most lucrative.
The film is scheduled to start shooting in Chicago next month. Samuel Bayer will direct. Michael Bay will produce.
Details on how the script and themes will be modernized have not been revealed.
