on the verge: The Deadly Syndrome
The Deadly Syndrome: Intoxicating name, intoxicating band. This best-friends band of four take the folk-meets-indie heritage of Modest Mouse and the humble grandeur of Arcade Fire, and give it a down-to-earth arts & crafts spin... which explains why they hand out cut-outs of cute ghosts on popsicle sticks to fans at their shows. Their irreverent charm shines through on their debut, The Ortolan, but the meat of the album is made up of intelligent musings on life and how to enjoy it.

  artist picks: Sarah Blasko
Coming from Australia to the dizzying streets of Hollywood with only a handful of bedroom demos, Sarah Blasko finally found her place—and her sound: languid, pitch-perfect vocals paired with earthy acoustic guitars and layers of the electronic and etheral. We wanted to raid the record collection of this eclecctic songstress to see what albums inspired her to write her latest album, What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have.
   Bjork
Debut

I love the way she called it Debut and has since made her albums like a collection, or a series, that traces her development; the cover and titles usually reflect this. She proves that pop music can be fun and creative. Her style is iconic.
   PJ Harvey
To Bring You My Love

It was the first PJ album Harvey I ever heard, but I have since listened to her others. I suppose that because this was the first album I had heard is why it has made the biggest impression on me. Some of the interesting ways she uses her voice on this record and the arrangements for the most part are simple and fairly classic—lots of droning organs and interesting arrangements.

   Radiohead
Amnesiac

I was one of those people who thought for a moment that Radiohead had a screw loose when they made this and Kid A, but soon I started to understand the importance of these records. "Pyramid Song" is one of my favourite songs.
   Sonic Youth
Dirty

It took me a while to listen to Sonic Youth, and this was the first record I got into. It's one of their "pop" records I suppose. The rawness of the delivery and the subject matter of the songs made a huge impression on me as a 17 year old.

   Talking Heads
77

A definitive album that signaled a highly original band. David Byrne is pretty much my hero. He has a style and a generosity as a performer that I find wonderful and fascinating.

   M. Ward
Post War

This is a brilliant album from start to finish. The record has a wonderful old style, as do his other records.

   Arcade Fire
Funeral

It's a lot of people's favourite record of the past few years, but it's hard to get sick of this one.

   Simon & Garfunkel
Bookends

I listened to this a lot when I was growing up, and it has some obvious classics.

   Original Movie Cast
The Sound of Music Soundtrack

This is one of my all time favourite films and it has some glorious songs like "Edelweiss" and "I Must Have Done Something Good."

   Wilco
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

I admire the imaginative arrangements and songs like "Jesus, etc" seem close to perfection to me.
