House music had become a bit less underground by the time Profile released its third Best of House compilation in 1990, the year Madonna gave house a pop hit with "Vogue." Like its predecessors, this CD is an unpredictable release reminding us of house's diversity by including a wide variety of material. Warmth and vocal personality are the main things on Inner City's haunting "Good Life," K-Os' Madonnesque "Definition of Love" and the gutsy Adeva!'s interpretation of the Otis Redding composition/Aretha Franklin hit "Respect." Just how close deep house is to late-'70s Philly disco/soul is hard to miss on Chanelle's sleek, very appealing "One Man." However, the producer, the track and the groove are dominant on Richie Rich and the Jungle Brothers' infectious "I'll House You," Reese & Santonio's "Rock to the Beat" and A Guy Named Gerald's "Voodoo Ray." The latter, in fact, doesn't really have a melody, just a groove and an assertive bassline. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
