All Music Guide Review

Listeners clued in by the title may not be surprised by the stark, ambient tilt to classic acid house accomplished by Kim Rapatti on his Mono Junk project. True to the Rapatti aesthetic, the 303/909 combination and a few old-school tools (sinewave generators, etc.) are responsible for a large majority of the total sound heard on Gloom, though as usual, he makes the limitations work for him instead of against. The epic "Enter" is a deep 303 reverb nightmare similar to contemporary Plastikman, while "Sonorous" is more melancholy than haunting, courtesy of a relaxed beat and some surprisingly tinkly, bell-like melodies. Though a few tracks never really break out of their atmospheric/experimental mold, Gloom is an often fascinating listen, caught in the verge between academic '70s electronics and bare '90s acid techno. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
