Herman's Second Herd was one of his finest orchestras and the last great big band to emerge from the '40s. Because its music was bop-oriented and the economic situation made it difficult for any large orchestras to survive, The Second Herd was history by December 1949, but before its passing it created quite a few classics. This album (whose contents have since been reissued with additional tracks on a previous album) contains 13 of their best recordings, including "Lemon Drop," "Early Autumn" and "More Moon." With such tenor soloists as Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and Gene Ammons, the "Four Brothers" band created music that would be revived often by Woody Herman during the next three decades. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
