Critically lauded but largely ignored by the public, Into the Mystic is a perfect example of why Hawaiian musicians so rarely break out of the island mold. Maui son Eric Gilliom tried. His album is a fusion of rock, tropical, and jazz styles sung partially in English and partially in Hawaiian. However, it doesn't have the slack-key guitar, ukulele, and falsetto sound that sells so well in Hawaii, and as a result local music consumers didn't go for it. Meanwhile, mainland listeners never even knew it existed. Gilliom must be credited for his attempt to bring something new to a Hawaiiana album, though. It has moments of poignancy and even moments of power. Certain effects, such as Gilliom's usage of a chromatic scale and jazzy saxophone during the Hawaiian-language song "I Am Singing," are extremely interesting (though not easy to listen to). Though the album goes through shaky patches, you can tell that Gilliom put his soul and his creative spirit into it. ~ L. Katz, All Music Guide
