Mastercuts' three-volume Classic Rare Groove series provides a sampling of the early-'90s U.K.-based phenomenon curated by Norman Jay, the DJ behind London's pirate radio station Kiss FM. The term "rare groove," as defined by Jay through his play lists, encompasses late-'70s and early-'80s dance musics that take in disco, R&B, jazz, funk, and all hybrids of those genres. While each volume has some true treasures, not everything can be expected to be earth-shattering. The third volume features Heatwave's "Ain't No Half-Steppin'," Archie Bell & the Drells' "It's Hard Not to Like You," Loleatta Holloway's "All About the Papers," Marlena Shaw's "Look at Me, Look at You," and Norman Connors' "Stella." ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
