The Jazz For... compilation series from 32 Jazz is not only a tremendous marketing idea -- helping match classic music to the listener's mood and lifestyle -- but also a way to experience the timeless power of a bygone day in jazz. As might be expected for a collection centering on romance, this 13-song gathering tends to focus on the smoky, cool vibe of "More Than You Know," which pits Buck Hill's sensuous tenor sax with Shirley Scott's moody organ. Similarly, Etta James' "Don't Misunderstand" has bedroom eyes written all over it. But it's not all gentle, graceful fare: The opening track, Cedar Walton's take on "Theme From Love Story," is an energetic, swinging affair, as is Les McCann's jumping trio date, "I Am in Love." Other tracks include Kenny Barron's "A Flower," Houston Person and Teddy Edwards' "That's All," and Patti Cathcart-sound-alike vocalist Morganna King doing a sparsely produced medley of "My Funny Valentine" and "You Are So Beautiful."
