By and large, the songs on New York Groove: The Best of Hello are catchy, but the performances are rather routine -- not a surprise considering the studio polish that goes into producing bubblegum music. The most recognizable tune on this compilation would be the Russ Ballard-penned "New York Groove" (think Bo Diddley in a pair of stompin' platform boots), which made the Top Ten in October of 1975. The other Ballard glam composition, "Star Studded Sham," is the real treat here. Most of the originals are standard pop/rock (the absolute highlight being the anthemic "Another School Day") with the occasional foray into disco. ~ Bart Bealmear, All Music Guide
