One of the most successful pop songwriting teams of the 1960s (along with Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil and Burt Bacharach & Hal David), Gerry Goffin & Carole King turned out scores of hits for a wide array of artists and in an impressive range of styles, making their songbook still viable 40-plus years later. This generous single-disc set features 30 of the pair's songs, although not necessarily in the best-known versions, but that isn't a big problem here since songs like "Up on the Roof" are so well conceived that the fact that listeners get Julie Grant's rendition rather than the definitive one by the Drifters doesn't detract from the song's strong appeal. Clear highlights include a rushing, bubbling "At the Club" by the Wolves, the Viscounts' "Who Put the Bomp (In the Bomp, Bomp, Bomp)," and an impressive, atmospheric "You're Just What I Was Looking for Today" by Status Quo, all of which show the writing range and strengths of the Goffin & King partnership. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
