    All Music Guide Review

The straightforwardly named Songs of Bruce Springsteen features interpretations by Dave Alvin, Paul Cebar, Martin Zellar, and Kurt Neumann. The Smithereens' "Downbound Train," Syd Straw's "Meeting Across the River," John Wesley Harding's "Jackson Cage," John Hiatt's "Johnny 99," and Marshall Crenshaw's "All or Nothin' at All" are some of the highlights of this salute from some of rock's best singer/songwriters to one of the most prominent of their own kind. However, Ben E. King's "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" is just as affecting in its own way, reaffirming that great interpreters are just as important as great songwriters; Songs of Bruce Springsteen showcases and pays tribute to all of the above. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
