Subtitled "The Rhythm and Blues Years," this highly enjoyable LP features the underrated and always cheerful singer Helen Humes in 1944 for four songs with Leonard Feather's Hip-tet (swing-oriented tunes that have been reissued on a Classics CD) and in 1950 with bands led by altoist Marshall Royal, drummer Roy Milton (a live date) and tenor great Dexter Gordon. Humes had a flexible style that could sound quite credible on blues, ballads, swing and early R&B. Among the many superior numbers heard from the 1950 dates are "This Love of Mine," "He May Be Yours," "E-Baba-Le-Ba" and "Helen's Advice." Hopefully, all of this music will be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
