With its large roster of guest rappers and revolving cast of producers, there isn't much consistency here besides in terms of themes. Overall though, this collection functions well as a compilation, supplying plenty of variety and a number of fairly impressive tracks relative to most West Coast gangsta rap collections. And if anything, Sex, Alcohol, and Pistol Grips showcases just how burgeoning the Bay Area's underground gangsta scene had grown to a decade after NWA. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
