Since Carmen Miranda, the image of an exotic, tropical, stereotyped Brazil has been explored worldwide. Well, the Brazilian soul is much more complex than that. The trend of "world" music has delighted producers in Brazil, who continue to sell this bizarre, exotic package. This album follows that line. Bringing all trendy artifices and mixing them with genuine Brazilian rhythms, Carlinhos Brown, an excellent percussionist who sings his songs with a small, juvenile voice, believes he's expanding the Brazilian musical tradition. He isn't. Brazilian music is strong enough to stand for itself without any tricks. Therefore, this is a world pop album -- not a Brazilian music album. It may appeal to many people, as it delivers fully danceable pop music with the surprising flavor of an impossible land. There are some catchy melodies, and all songs are performed with professional competence, ranging from tranquil violão moments to wild Bahian percussion in a careful production.
