All Music Guide Review

The Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie produced the lead track on this one, and did another one of his truly great jobs. "Something More" here is much different from the version on Whirlpool, being a full band performance with the heavy, arty psych guitar flow in total effect along with rumbling breakbeat drumming and the group's angelic vocals. It's a great nugget, and while the album version is equally good, it's a pity that this one was fairly obscure in comparison. "Feel the Same" also brings a touch of funk percussion in, though the song is generally lighter, the increasingly noisier guitar wash matched by what sound like vibes and, in a definite change, upfront vocals. "Satin Safe" takes things down a noisier and more aggressive route; while the singing still remains sweetly soothing, the very Sonic Youthy verse and zoned and stoned chorus showcases great modern guitar psych. A cover of the Beatles' "Rain" fills the release out; if not on the level of the original, it's still a fun runthrough. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide
