Get past the trio of monotonous techno tracks at the beginning of I.R.S. Greatest Hips, Vol. 4: The Remixes and there are some exceptional 12" reworkings that are highly collectible. "Is There Anybody in There? [Extended Dance Mix]" adds fuel to Hunters & Collectors' fiery mix of post-punk aggression and funk. Pulverizing percussion, slamming basslines, and meaty guitars characterize Hunters & Collectors' interpretation of club music. Such a rocking song may seem out of synch with all of the electronica and new wave pop surrounding it; however, it fulfills the album's purpose of making feet move. Caterwaul's "The Sheep's a Wolf [Extended Dance Mix]" has more forceful drums than the original; its howling female vocals still sound like a blatantly derivative cross between Siouxsie & the Banshees and Throwing Muses, but the track is nonetheless captivating. While "The Sheep's a Wolf" resuscitates mid-'80s gothic rock, the rest of the album's best picks give a tune-up to former Top 40 smashes and songs that dreamed of reaching the U.S. charts. Belinda Carlisle's excessively sweet "Mad About You" was her first solo hit after leaving the Go-Go's; however, the extended version of the track, with its pulsating beat, should've been the one on the radio. "Tenderness [Special Dance Mix]" breathes new life into General Public's overplayed confection. Ranking Roger's "So Excited" and Jane Wiedlin's "Blue Kiss" are undeservedly forgotten '80s classics that appear here in superior remixes. ~ Michael Sutton, All Music Guide
