    All Music Guide Review

Promo Only has been supplying DJs and radio stations with a specialized set of CD compilations collecting everything from "must-have" big hits to obscure rarities, so it's a pleasant surprise that such an enjoyable collection of A-level dance music has come out of a company that often acts like a patronizing helping hand. For one, it should make clued-in dance fans a bit pleased to see that this release features reasonably scarce remixes of Mr. Oizo, Hardknox, and Trance Allstars all in one handy disc. For another, it should make those seeking gems even more pleased to hear tracks like Timo Maas' funky remix of Green Velvet's "Flash" or the heaving (yet plucky) Bedrock remix of Underworld's enormously respected "Cowgirl" on the very same disc. With such a grab-bag of French comic house, industrial disco, and straightforward trance, the level of coherence is low, but it's the compilation's accommodating nature that helps outweigh most of its weaknesses. By and large, Promo Only Alternative Club Aug 2000 is definitely one of the company's better releases. Helping hand or not. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide
