Between the Sheets captured Millie Jackson at her most straightforward and romantic; its sequel, Sex and Soul, concentrates on Jackson's other side -- the bawdy, explicit soul that made her reputation, complete with raunchy spoken raps (in the original, pre-hip-hop sense of the term). All of the tracks have been remastered, and most date from Jackson's late-'70s/early-'80s stint on Spring Records, though the compilers have also licensed the full 11-minute version of her breakthrough hit, "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right." This stuff may seem a little kitschy at times, but it's never less than entertaining, and it's a good introduction to the best-known aspect of Jackson's career (even if it's missing much from her '70s prime). ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
