It's difficult to really call this collection Punk Gate when there are a number of post-punk and other artists on file here. That said, shockingly enough for the Dressed to Kill label, this is a pretty enjoyable collection. Beki Bondage roars out of the box with a more than acceptable version of the Plastic Ono Band's "Cold Turkey," and the Stranglers' Hugh Cornwell does a fine job with Stephen Stills' "For What It's Worth." We've all heard the Sid Vicious version of "My Way," of course, but how many of us have heard Pauline Murray's reading of Patti Smith's "Free Money," or the Sex Gang Children's simply OK version of the Rolling Stones' "As Tears Go By"? Public Menace does a nice job with the Undertones' "Teenage Kicks," and so does Gene October of Chelsea with Bobby Fuller's "I Fought the Law," though it's not quite as fine as the Clash's version. This is an oddball collection but one that appeals to the perverse as well as students of the era. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
