Lyrics from Talcum Soul: 26 Stonking Northern Soul Greats

    All Music Guide Review

And so the most confusingly titled series in the history of Northern Soul reissues, Talcum Soul: 26 Stonking Northern Soul Greats, begins -- the "talcum" reference is confusing enough, but what the hell does "stonking" mean? Fortunately the music rights all wrongs -- compiler Dean Rudland seems to have been handed the keys to the EMI vaults and he makes the most of the opportunity, digging up lost classic after lost classic from labels like Liberty, Imperial, and United Artists. Rudland also does a good job of mixing up bigger names with lesser-knowns, balancing the likes of Little Anthony & the Imperials ("Better Use Your Head"), Garnet Mimms ("As Long as I Have You"), and the O'Jays (the magnificent "Lipstick Traces") against the relatively obscure but equally wonderful Marjorie Black ("One More Hurt"), the Casualeers ("Dance, Dance, Dance"), and Marva Josie ("Don't"). Recommended. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
