    The second in Goldmine's Big City Soul series features soul tracks released on Verve and its subsidiary labels. The listing includes some early solo Wilson Pickett material, on which he doesn't sound as wicked as he later became, and a lot of surprises, including a solo side from Nick Ashford, a Poindexter Brothers jam, one by Terri Bryant, and a good Superiors track. Collectors will gravitate toward songs by Garnet Mims, Howard Tate, and the forgotten Howard Guyton. For variety, Clara Ward (a gospel singer) checks in with "My Right Direction" and Bessie Banks (a blues singer) with "I Can't Make It (Without You Baby)." ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
