    All Music Guide Review

Say what you will about Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, but the man's taste in cover material is impeccable -- the limited-edition Indian Summer EP cherry picks from across the spectrum of rock & roll, remaining true to the spirit of the original artists while also holding firm to Kember's signature sound. The title cut is a Beat Happening song, and one that's had surprising cachet with other indie artists -- both Luna and Eugenius have recorded renditions. With its spare, minimalist approach, "Indian Summer" sets the tone for what follows; of all the material, the reading of Bo Diddley's "It's Alright" makes the most sense -- Diddley's patented beat was a clear precursor to the hypnotically circular music Kember himself would later perfect. The highlight, however, is a surprisingly poignant rendition of Jan & Dean's "Baby Don't You Worry (California Lullabye)." [Note: A 10" vinyl edition also includes the 13th Floor Elevators cover "Thru the Rhythm."] ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
