In 1980, RCA reissued two of Jefferson Airplane's latter-day records, Crown of Creation and Volunteers, as a double-LP set. It's not necessarily a bad way to acquire the music on this set, but the original vinyl edtions and subsequent CD reissues offer better packaging and fidelity. Crown of Creation is an impressive but meandering journey through the drugged-out sensibilities of 1967. The science-fiction content gives it some cohesiveness, but not enough. Volunteers is the band's most political album and a somewhat dated statement, but also a very joyous and rewarding one. "We Can Be Together" is still a compelling anthem. ~ Bruce Eder & Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
