    Despite the title and artwork, Homegirls of Soul isn't a contemporary urban soul collection by any means -- it's an oldies compilation featuring soul numbers from the '60s and '70s. Most of these songs don't appear regularly on compilations, which makes this budget-line disc a good choice for collectors looking for hard-to-find cuts. In some cases, the songs aren't anthologized much because they aren't very distinctive, but there are a fair number of fine, overlooked singles here that were big hits in their day. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
