All Music Guide Review

Former label A&M Records takes advantage of Garland Jeffreys' excellent Don't Call Me Buckwheat album released earlier this year on BMG to issue Matador and More ..., a compilation of his material from the '70s. Not that the cash-in isn't warranted. Jeffreys' melting pot of singer/songwriter folk, urban R&B, and smooth reggae stylings backs lyrics that dissect a broad range of New York-inspired life-slices and emotions. The concluding eight-minute track "Spanish Town" still stands as Jeffreys' epic, steeped in atmosphere so thick you can almost feel the heat and smell the smells that wash over the song's setting.
