Singer Songwriters is a collection of artists that fit the title description, with the catch being that most of the performers are not that well known. The biggest name here is David Johansen, who is very far away from both his New York Dolls roots and his show-biz alternate identity, Buster Poindexter. His two contributions are both good but should never have been included considering he didn't write either of the songs, yet this is Singer Songwriters. In fact, Christy Baron and Rebecca Pidgeon are also guilty of this, which makes the name of the album that much more meaningless. But outside of that discrepancy, there is one other factor that makes this album pretty average, and that is the predictable songwriting. These songs are very typical of the kind of material one would expect from a singer/songwriter, but everything about these songs is very familiar. There are no new twists or distinct personalities grafted onto the music; just the bare minimum of what is necessary to make the songs work. Not that these are bad songs, but some originality or experimentation would have helped this to be a great album. As it is, it is a collection that may appeal to the fans of these individual artists, but as a whole does not work very well. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
