Lyrics from Love Affair: Sixties Love Songs

    All Music Guide Review

Love Affair is a surprisingly good compilation that puts together some of the best love-oriented pop songs of the '60s. Virtually every song is a huge hit from the era, and those that aren't are at least recognizable. Not only were these songs big, but they were also excellent pop tunes, from the Shirelles' gorgeous "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" to the Fifth Dimension's brilliant "Wedding Bell Blues." Of course, few of these songs were actually written by the performers, but with top-notch songwriters like Carole King, Gerry Goffin, and Laura Nyro on board the music is definitely more important than the artists in most cases. There are a few rock songs on board, too, notably Jefferson Airplane's awesome "Somebody to Love" and the Youngblood's sappy but catchy "Get Together." Because of the oldies feel of the compilation, the genre mixing really does not come into play. Good songs are good songs, and this compilation sure has a lot of them. The black sheep of the collection is Ed Ames, whose golden throated version of "My Cup Runneth Over" is completely out of step with the youthful energy the rest of these artists display. Otherwise, this is a great album that any fan of good pop music can appreciate. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
