At first, the idea of a Hymen double-CD compilation might imply power noise, since Hymen is affiliated with several noise acts and the noise label Ant-Zen. However, Teknoir is both a more challenging and compelling taste of intelligent post-industrial works. Teknoir does bring in some of the expected technoid noises, with appearances by artists such as Imminent Starvation and Winterkalte (neither act providing simple noise fare). The selections are subtle, however, and have been selected in a way that does not upset the flavor of the release. That flavor is one of experimental electronica with a keen intelligence. Much of the release (such as Orphx's "rnd") could have just as easily appeared alongside IDM projects Gescom or Autechre, but instead appears alongside experimenters such as Beefcake and Klangstabil. Acts such as PAL have been arranging noises in IDM structures for some time and sit comfortably in the grey area between genres.

Never is the overall tone of Teknoir compromised. The mood varies between simple and textural to dense and noisy, but at all times is engaging and different. This means that the tracks selected from each artist may not be representative of that artist's style (such as Synapscape and Snog's contributions). It also means, however, that Teknoir is a definitive sampler for a genre of music that arguably has its roots in electronica and electro-industrial, possibly the best and only sampler of its kind. ~ Theo Kavadias, All Music Guide
