The singles collected on Doing God's Work aren't the most important chapter in the story of Creation, but like Different for Domeheads and Wild Summer, Wow, this compilation documents the destitute era of the label, when Alan McGee and company were struggling to survive financially. Phil Wilson's very Go-Betweens-like "Ten Miles" has the strummy fervor of the Australian favorites, even incorporating strings in a similar fashion. The reverb-drenched first version of the House of Love's "Shine On" is a major highlight. An acoustic Momus tune and a spectral, drumless contribution from Swell Maps' Nikki Sudden (with the Jacobites) round out the compilation, which also includes McGee's Biff Bang Pow! and the Jasmine Minks. Doing God's Work demonstrates the label's first signs of branching out sonically, such that the label no longer remained a rumpus room for Nuggets fans. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
