All Music Guide Review
Don't be fooled by the Springsteen lookalike on the cover of Rhino's Rolling Stone Presents: Classic Rock -- Springsteen is nowhere to be heard here. Instead, it's assembled of classic rock radio favorites from the '70s (with the occasional cut from the '60s and '80s, namely "The Weight" for the former, "Legs" and "Turn It On Again" for the latter). Apart from Jefferson Starship's "Ride the Tiger," there is nothing unexpected -- every cut is very familiar, played daily on classic rock radio. Now, this may irritate many observers, but there may be several listeners that are simply thankful to have all these songs on one collection. Still, "all these songs" means ten songs! It's hard not to think there could have been more cuts, even if the label did shell out for first-rate cuts and classy packaging (the liner notes replicating the font and layout of classic Rolling Stone magazine). All this makes the collection feel a little anticlimatic, but anyone that goes into this without blinders, just looking for good-sounding versions of these songs will likely be fairly satisfied (even if they may think the disc should be longer). ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
