Interestingly, each artist that appears on the Alaska.De soundtrack (released on Berlin's Kitty-Yo label) has his or her own release on the label as well. Coincidence? Regardless, all of the artists here are very deserving of their appearances on this compilation as the label has proven itself to be a force in experimental pop music in the late '90s. Though Alaska.De's soundtrack may seem similar to that of Trainspotting, it maintains a slight German bent as it features Surrogat, Laub, Maximillan Hecker, and new Berlin transplants Peaches and Gonzales. It's focus isn't quite as pop-oriented, nor is it as marketable as Trainspotting, but it captures the same European downtown angst only it carries it in a somewhat different direction. The tracks by Marsmobil, Laub, and Maximillian Hecker are evocative and filmic, and the second of the two discs, the complete score as performed by mosermeyerdoring, is, not surprisingly, emotive and illustrative as well. mosermeyerdoring's score is at times reminiscent of Air, and perhaps mimics a number of the songs on their Virgin Suicides soundtrack, but holds its own quite well. The only sore thumbs here are the contributions of Gonzales and Peaches, whose music doesn't really compliment the film soundtrack idea. The songs on their own are excellent, but they seem to throw off the balance of the tracks compiled for the soundtrack. ~ Ken Taylor, All Music Guide
