In 2000, Philippine singer Mystica released her second album, Walang Takip (No Cover). Her self-titled debut album in 1999 was excellent, with the singer imparting much passion on the mostly rock-styled material, including a remake of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Mystica sang in a gruff voice that evoked comparison to Tyler as well as Rod Stewart. Mystica has toned down her vocal histrionics on Walang Takip. She still displays passion, but in a more subtle manner than before. She even sings an easy listening song here. Her voice has less of the sandpaper textures and is more smooth this time; the Rod Stewart comparison is less warranted. Musically, the album takes some adventurous paths, as heard on the funky "Lollipop," replete with a swinging horn section. The rock-styled "Hinay Hinay Lang" (Take It Easy) is heavily laced with the blues. "Syota Pa Lang" (Boyfriend Only) moves with a spirited, forward momentum and has a pleasant pop/rock ambience. Mystica also performs several numbers with provocative double entendres, a popular song element in the Philippines. For example, the easy listening "Labi Sa Labi" (Lips to Lips) -- subtitled Love Song of the Bottle -- is sung from the point of view of a bottle, telling of a man "removing my cover so that you can taste me." While Walang Takip finds Mystica mostly foregoing the rough voice that was previously so distinctive, on "Special Love Song" she returns to the gruff style that again invites comparison to Rod Stewart. Walang Takip isn't as immediately powerful as Mystica's debut album, but takes time to appreciate and is worth savoring. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
