A wonderful, sorely overlooked late-'50s and '60s soul singer, Marv Johnson had the misfortune to have early hits on Tamla, then a tiny label and not the giant wing of Motown it would become by the mid-'60s. He was a dynamic, aggressive vocalist who excelled at heartache ballads, and, as these songs repeatedly show, was among the finest of his era in building and pacing a song, delivering a lyric, and wrenching emotion out of whatever he was singing. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide
