The Wondermints

On the heels of their epic Bali album, the song "Cellophane" was chosen to be the album's single in Japan, where the Wondermints enjoy a huge following. The title track was remixed for the EP, bringing out a bit more clarity in Mike D'Amico's vocal. The rest of the song remains a great example of blending 1960s stylistic influences (from Motown to the Beatles) while retaining the band's 21st century sheen and vibe. The remainder of the tracks were previously unreleased studio material which did not appear on Bali. Darian Sahanaja's graceful "Invisible Pant" is a mini-masterpiece of self-exploration, combining a vague Latin flavor and feel with his usual solid pop sensibility. The (most likely electronic) string arrangement is one of the most beautiful and organic in the current pop landscape. "Reality Check," written by Nick Walusko is an almost Raspberries-influenced rocker, led by some sterling electric rhythm guitar playing and a whimsical Paul McCartney/Harry Nilsson, music hall vibe that fits the band's overall eclecticism like a glove. A Beach Boys-inspired "Rejected Beer Ad #2" is a self-explanatory radio or television jingle, yet the overall performance is a mind-blower, complete with some well-executed harmonies and an effervescent atmosphere that elevates it beyond being a throw away cut.
