Lyrics from Doo Wop Greats
All Music Guide Review
No pop genre has so poetically charted the yearnings of new love as doo wop, with its endless pleas for romance under the stars and its pledges of complete devotion in the moonlight, as if, as the Penguins sing in "Earth Angel," love itself was of celestial origin. That song is collected here in this three-disc set of classic vocal group tracks, along with dozens of other classic doo wop odes to the heart, including "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers, "In the Still of the Night" by the Five Satins, "Book of Love" by the Monotones, "The Great Pretender" and "Only You" by the Platters, as well as the original version of "Barbara Ann" by the Regents and the immortal "Duke of Earl" by Gene Chandler. In the end, 42 tracks of this stuff will make you feel like every day is Valentine's Day, which is maybe not such a bad idea, unless you prefer the blues, which is the flip side of all this. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
