    While Definitive Records' Year in Your Life series does a fine job with the collections that they have issued which span single years, their decade spanning collections issued as part of the same series seem a bit scattershot. The songs are almost always recognizable, but not consistently iconic, and while the series plants itself pretty firmly in pop music, there is a wide range of styles and moods represented here. A Year in Your Life: 1970's, Vol. 1 starts out with Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" but then goes all over the musical map, from the funky instrumental sounds of Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven" to the country flavor of the Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard It in a Love Song." There are a few highlights, though, including Luther Ingram's "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right." ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide
