    All Music Guide Review

One of the strongest volumes in the Year in Your Life series, Year in Your Life: 1985, Vol. 2 captures the big, flashy sound of that year perfectly. Beginning with one of the year's classic singles, Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World," the collection rounds up synth-heavy hits like Mr. Mister's "Broken Wings," Animotion's "Obsession," and Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme." Glenn Frey's glitzy "The Heat is On," and Murray Head's wonderful pop oddity "One Night in Bangkok" also reflect the slick, sleek sound of the Me Decade, albeit in very different ways. Even the collection's most soulful moments -- the Prince-lite of Ready for the World's "Oh Sheila," Klymaxx's "I Miss You," and the Commodores' underrated Motown eulogy "Nightshift" -- have the slightly chilly undercurrent of mid-'80s production values. While it's too short to be a complete look at 1985's biggest songs, Year in Your Life: 1985, Vol. 2 comes close to being a perfect time capsule of that year's sounds. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
