    All Music Guide Review

Sounds Eclectic compiles live, previously unreleased material from the archive of L.A. public radio outlet KCRW and the Nic Harcourt-hosted music program Morning Becomes Eclectic. A Yo-Yo Ma performance on solo cello is a stately enough beginning; played off later selections like the boho ramble of the Dandy Warhols' "Country Leaver" or Supreme Beings of Leisure's electronicized pop, it also illustrates that the title isn't kidding. Elsewhere Beck covers Hank Williams ("Lonesome Whistle"); Willie Nelson gives "Healing Hands of Time" a gentle arrangement for acoustic guitar, accordion, and harmonica; and Montreal's Stars suggest the Notwist with their halting "Going, Going, Gone." Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Energy Flow" closes the collection on a studied, quietly hopeful solo piano note. Sounds Eclectic offers a nice ride through the varied styles and colors of contemporary music, and even puts its proceeds toward continuing support for KCRW. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
