    All Music Guide Review

The '90s installment of Casey Kasem's America's Top 10 series sticks firmly to pop favorites of the decade. But that actually makes it stronger, since it would be hard to sync up, say, Amy Grant's bouncy "Baby Baby" with most of the grunge or alternative movements' heavy hitters. Instead, the comp moves through an engaging mix of adult pop, light club/dance hits, and a few crossovers from the urban charts. There's the two-dimensional groove of C+C Music Factory, Timmy T's cloying high school dance fave "One More Try," and smoother than smooth adult contemporary from Wilson Phillips ("Release Me"), and Taylor Dayne ("Love Will Lead You Back"). En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" roars more than any of the material here, but it fits in nicely with the slow-burning sensuality of the Alannah Myles gem "Black Velvet." Top 10 doesn't travel much deeper than, well, the top ten, but a few of its selections aren't heard as much anymore, granting them deep cut status here. Paula Cole's biggest hit might have been "I Don't Want to Wait," but she first broke through with the dusty Joni Mitchell urgency of "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" It's included here alongside the energetic, rustic pop of "Roll to Me," by Glasgow's Del Amitri. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
