    Like the Nova Tunes and Test compilations, the Nova Classics discs demonstrate the breadth and open-mindedness of France's Radio Nova, but as you can tell from the title, the focus here is more rooted in the distant past -- especially where soul, funk and reggae are considered -- with a smattering of relatively recent inclusions that should appeal to fans of old sounds. The first volume of Nova Classics features the Undisputed Truth's "Brother Louie," Cymande's "Brothers on the Side," Leroy Sibbles' "Blood in the Street," and José Feliciano's version of "My World Is Empty Without You." A newer highlight from Terry Callier's re-ignited career, "Love Theme from Spartacus," is another wise inclusion. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
