All Music Guide Review
Scootering Sounds is an odd compilation in that it's linked not by musical style, or even something like an event or a soundtrack, but by the songs' links to the mod and scootering culture of the United Kingdom. At least the music, however, can be broken into three categories: 1960s Northern soul (obscure American '60s soul music that has a big cult following in England), mod revival music by rock bands, and both vintage and latter-day ska. The Northern soul cuts are the highlights, including decent, if not quite amazing, little-known up-tempo dance efforts by the Exciters, the Cavaliers, Rose Valentine, and Tobi Legend. The mod revival cuts sound a little naff, to use the British expression, in this context, though artists like Secret Affair, the Purple Hearts, and the Lambrettas (all represented here) have done their bit to keep 1960s mod rock in front of an audience, much as garage revivalists have done for U.S. '60s punk. The ska selections are perhaps even less memorable, though Lionrock's "Rude Boy Rock" is a good instrumental; the Selecter's well-known "Too Much Pressure" is heard here in a "96 version." Disappointingly, original release dates are not given for most of the tracks, and the liner notes do not offer any details whatsoever about the songs and the artists. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
