Lyrics from Respect the Rock, Vol. 1
All Music Guide Review
Respect the Rock, Vol. 1 is a collection of rock bands that fit under the stoner rock banner that haunts many bands who take inspiration from heavier '70s rock bands. While it is easy to point to these bands and see their Stooges and Aerosmith tendencies, they are still making quality rock music that happens to take influence from those bands. The best artists featured here are also the best known; Queens of the Stone Age, Fu Manchu, and the Hellacopters contribute excellent songs that showcase the best that this genre has to offer. The Supersuckers, who are becoming the unofficial grandfathers of this movement, deserves mention for their excellent disc-opener "The Evil Powers of Rock & Roll." A few of the songs are rather dull, especially Stargunn's "Katwalk" (which sounds like '80s hair farmers Bang Tango) and Mother Superior's generic "Black Silk." But for the most part, even the smaller bands featured here are at least above average. This collection may not be great from front to back, but the good songs featured here outweigh the bad songs. This really is a good representation of an overlooked movement that has the potential to reach out to fans of both classic rock and heavy metal. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
