Like Salsoul's Original Salsoul Classics double-disc set and Charly's three-volume Salsoul Essentials series, Mastercuts compiles an impressive batch of Salsoul nuggets for both volumes of Classic Salsoul Mastercuts. Included on this first volume: Candido's thumping, blazing "Jingo," Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up" (one of Larry Levan's hottest remixes for 12"), Salsoul Orchestra's kitschy "You're Just the Right Size," the great Leroy Burgess' "Heartbreaker," First Choice's monumental "Let No Man Put Asunder," Double Exposure's "Ten Percent" (the first commercial 12" single, remixed by Tom Moulton), and Joe Bataan's excellent, horn-drenched take on Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle." Although Classic Salsoul Mastercuts wasn't the first to highlight some of the label's output, it's still an invaluable and timeless document of some of the finest dance music recorded. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
